 The Road to Heaven

It's been said "the road to hell has been paved with good intentions."  Many people have missed heaven because they have believed the wrong things about God and His Son, Jesus. Some errors include believing:

  • I am not a bad person. You may not be, but people don't go to hell because they are bad.  They go to hell because they have refused to accept Jesus Christ as the only way to get into heaven.
  • God doesn't send people to hell.  God has never condemned anyone to hell. People send themselves to hell by their refusal to accept Christ.  When you drive your car, police don't just stop everyone and pass out tickets.  No, that is reserved for those who don't accept the rules of the road, and by their refusal, have caused the consequences of breaking the law to come into effect.
  • I don't believe in Hell.  Just because a person has never seen a hurricane or know if it exists, doesn't mean that a hurricane is a figment of someone's imagination. There are realities that none of us have seen, but that does not make them false.
  • A God who loves people will forgive us all and take us to heaven.  God does love all people and He will forgive us and invite us to join him in heaven.  But Jesus is the invitation.  If you reject him, you reject God's invitation to heaven.

God wants every person on the face of the earth to join him in heaven.  He is interested in each of us experiencing the joy of spending eternity with Him in heaven.  It's not something that's hard to do at all.  The key is "accepting the free gift of salvation God has already provided."

What is that gift, you may ask?

The gift came in the form of his Son, Jesus Christ.  John 3:16-17 says "God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him would not perish (go to hell) but would have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved."

If you are really serious about wanting to go to heaven, then take this road trip with me.

  • Romans 3:10 "There is none righteous, no not one."  It all begins with us accepting the fact that we don't do anything right.  We think wrong thoughts, we say wrong things and we do wrong acts.  We have to apologize, which typically comes from admitting you are not perfect.  No one can go to heaven who believes they are self righteous (I am right all by myself).
  • Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."   Since we know that none of us are righteous in and of ourselves, we agree with God when He calls us sinners.  We have sinned and fallen short of God's expectations for us.
  • Hebrews 9:27 "For it is appointed unto man to die once, but after that, the judgment."  Every one of us has to think about death and once we die; we will stand before the Lord and face the judgment of our lives.  This judgment will not be based on what we consider to be good or bad, but on what the judge (God) considers to be good or bad.
  • Romans 6:23 "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life."  The penalty for sin is death.  All who sin and die in their sin will spend eternity away from the Lord.
  • Romans 10:9 - "If we will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we shall be saved."   The key to escaping the penalties associated with sin is to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior.  We do this by saying about our sins what God says and believing in our hearts what God believes about all who confess His Son as savior.
  • Matthew 10:32-33 "Therefore, whoever confesses Me before men, him I will confess before my Father who is in heaven.  But whoever denies Me before men I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven."  If we deny Jesus as Christ while here on earth, Jesus said He will deny us before the Father in heaven. But if we accept Him while we are here, then He will confess that we knew Him while here on earth.
